ROCK & ROLL ANIMAL ARCHIVES, VOL.1 9/26/05

Q: What are the Rock & Roll Animal Archives?

A: The appreciation of the work Lou Reed did with
the musicians on tour immediately before and
following the release of the classic BERLIN
album.

Q: What is the quest?

A: To track down all the live concert tapes that can
be found from this wonderful tour, and present an
idea to Lou Reed that he offer official releases
of this material to his fan base via LouReed.com

Q: What is the model?

A: Both Experience Hendrix and The Doors have put
together amazing collections of past music for the
sincere followers of Hendrix and The Doors

Q: With so much success around the world on the
discovery of "Bonus tracks" "alternate mixes"
and even dance mixes (Nico's "All Tomorrow's
Parties" on Cleopatra comes to mind) a coalition
of serious Lou Reed devotees could do much to
help Lou chronicle his legend, couldn't they?

A: Bob Dylan has a firm grasp of how important it is
to clean up the "loose ends" before he leaves this
mortal coil. Dylan is in full control of his
old masters with the wonderful Columbia/Legacy
re-releases of his "Bootleg" series.

In the mail today I got the Russian import of
"Hendrix In The West/Loose Ends" - The Russian
record labels double the fun. "Loose Ends" was
never released in the U.S. for Hendrix, to my
knowledge. Jimi was so great that even his
music possibly not intended for commercial release
is just marvelous. That is a great double disc.

But Hendrix never got the chance to put that
catalog of out-takes out on his terms. And if
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards don't hurry up,
their classic "golden era" tapes will be published
by someone else 30 or 40 years from now, without
their input. The Larry Fallon strings that we've
never heard on "Wild Horses" (the late Jimmy Miller was partners with me in a company in the 80s;
he was also partners with Larry Fallon who was the real producer behind "Brandy, You're a Fine Girl" -
though he only got arranging credits on the disc;
Fallon put strings on Wild Horses that have not seen the light of day. The Stones' fans would eat this up.

Producer Paul Williams actually compiled a live album from THE TOTS that is NOT the radio broadcast; RCA had taped THE TOTS (as they taped David Bowie at the
Boston Music Hall during his ZIGGY tour), but both those albums have not been released.

A "write in" campaign to Sony/BMG by our coalition could make this album a reality. But just as important, it could be the start of an entire series of LOU REED live albums for fans, controlled by Lou,
with tons of information we compile on the web.

Q: Where do we start?

A: Links to "trees" and "branches" of Lou Reed tapes
on the internet is a start. Let's do what
Doors' author Greg Shaw (not to be confused with
BOMP RECORDS' Greg Shaw) did with the book
THE DOORS ON THE ROAD - compile a list of all
Lou's live performances (to the best of our
ability) and what tapes exist of these concerts.

DIFFERENT source tapes are always helpful as they
can be turned into "stereo" mixes.

Starting with PHANTOM ANIMAL I will give a review of the disc, track by track.

The next phase is a write-in campaign to SONY/BMG to get the TOTS album produced by Paul Williams put into release.

p.s. my original tape of the final Doug Yule Velvet Underground show from Olivers in Boston (next to
Fenway Park) is truncated on the FINAL VU boxed set.
That would also be a nice artifact put on an extended "Squeeze" lp.

Here's what THE DOORS have on their site:

http://www.thedoors.com/bmr/

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...
The folks from The Doors Music Company have been
reviewing hours of Doors concert tapes in their
relentless pursuit of the very best live recordings.
They're currently assembling several stunning new
packages, some featuring never-before-heard material.
Stay tuned!

As many of you know, the goal of BMA is to provide
Doors fans with the best live and unreleased
recordings from The Doors archives. The Doors are also
very serious about tracking down "long-lost" items
that exist outside their archive for possible use in
future projects. Anything from live shows
(audience/soundboard), lost studio reels, amateur
video footage or photos.

The band has created an e-mail address for people to
send information that might help them track down and
acquire these items. If any of you have some
information that might help the band in their quest,
please e-mail archive@thedoors.com to contact a member
of the Doors Research Team.

We know some of you might be a little hesitant to come
forward, thinking you might get in trouble for having
these items. In all honesty, we just want the items
for use in possible future projects - no need to
worry. And we don't want to take your tapes, or own
them - we just want access to clean copies (or arrange
to copy the originals and return them to you). As an
added incentive for coming forward, we are willing to
make you a royalty participant if we use your item in
an official release. A win-win situation for both
sides! We look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you, from The Doors.
